Sunflower Seeds Recall For Listeria Affects Dozens Of Products

seedsMultiple companies have recalled more than 100 combined snack products for possible contamination of listeria in sunflower kernels.

The FDA reported Wednesday that TreeHouse Foods initiated a voluntary recall. TreeHouse said its supplier notified it of listeria monocytogenes bacteria contamination in its sunflower seeds.

Nearly 90 products were included in the recall, including items sold under brands including Nature’s Harvest, Great Value, Meijer, Signature Kitchen and Southern Grove. They were distributed nationwide.

Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children and frail or elderly people, as well as others with weakened immune systems. No illnesses have been reported, and the company is working with the FDA to investigate the problem, TreeHouse stated.

Consumers who have purchased any of the products are urged to dispose of or return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with any questions may call 1-800-756-5781 between 8am to 7pm ET Monday through Friday.

Kroger products sold across 28 states were recalled and pulled from shelves for listeria concerns, the FDA reported Tuesday. Is supplier indicated sunflower kernels could be contaminated with listeria.

SunOpta recalls

Hickory Harvest Foods recalled packs of its sunflower kernel products for risk of a listeria contamination at the advice of the company’s supplier, SunOpta. Shipments went to at least 28 states.

The products were packaged or distributed from Hickory Harvest between February 15 and May 2. No illnesses have been reported.

“Hickory Harvest Foods is working with its customers and the FDA to ensure the products are removed from commerce as quickly as possible,” the company stated.

SunOpta also announced a recall of two products produced between Feb. 1 and Feb. 19. Planters Sunflower Kernels and Dakota’s Best Biggy’z Roasted and Salted Kernels

  • Dakota’s Best Biggy’z Roasted and Salted Kernels, 16-ounce, UPC 834648001484, best by date 02/11/2017.
  • Planters Sunflower Kernels, 3-ounce, 029000012714, best by date 3/6/17, 3/7/17 or 3/8/17.

Giant Eagle, which also uses SunOpta as its supplier, issued a recall for fear of listeria. Its products, with a PLU of 65167, were sold loose in the bulk bin in the Carmel Market District in Pennsylvania and Ohio between Feb. 15 and May 3.

The product was sold prepackaged with sell by dates of August 1 through August 19. No illnesses have been reported.
